You contain your new friend in the bowl, and then stick a lid or other object over the opening. Many bowls won't have room to properly fly, so they slow an escape while you negotiate a covering. That gives you an opportunity to bring your friend somewhere safe outside (many bats like tall trees, as high as you can get them, for a better takeoff and for safety from predators).
